So this week’s Music for Monday does seem like a bit of a no brainer in that I’ve picked Tom Petty, who – sadly – died last week. Tom Petty is one of those artists that I feel like has been around forever and whose songs I seem to know all the words for, though I don’t own all his albums. Even if it’s a song you don’t know, you do instantly know it’s Petty as soon as you hear the first few bars. His music was distinctive, as was his voice.

One of the things I love almost as much as books is music. I listen to it – a lot – and worship at the alter of Spotify. I also have an addiction to vinyl, which I still buy when I can because, well, there is nothing like it really – the feel, the sound, the experience of playing a record. Still, I digress. This is a long way of getting round to saying I thought it would be fun to start sharing some of my favourite songs, ones I can’t get out of my head or have recently (re)discovered. Recently, we finished watching The Leftovers, one of my favourite shows in recent years. It’s got to be a good month since it ended. Yet, I am still thinking about it and still feeling slightly bereft at the idea that there won’t be anymore.
It doesn’t matter that the writers and producers were bringing the show to the end they wanted….I just want more, especially as I only got three years of what the Guardian described as a “delightful, beguiling, thematically rich programme that’s perfectly written and exquisitely acted“.
Anyway, it got me thinking about the shows I have loved, and “lost”, over the years and how I can’t resist revisiting them thanks to the wonder that is Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. They aren’t necessarily the best shows ever made and some had, if I’m honest, probably ran their course.
