Tried and Tested: Skin Chemists Whitening & Lightening Nourishing Facial Oil

I am a big fan of facial oils, especially at this time of year when the weather is cold and my skin constantly feels dry and tight.  Normally, I use one by Sanctuary, which is reasonably price at under £20 and leaves my skin feeling soft and supple on a morning.  At the end of last year, though, I was running out and saw an offer for an Whitening & Lightening Facial Oil by Skin Chemists that I couldn’t resist as I had never tried the brand, but had always wanted to.
The oil is supposed to brighten my complexion (a good thing as cold weather can leave it looking dull as well as dry), even out skin tone and reduce age spots (which I don’t actually have but, given I’m on the side of 40 that’s closer to 50, I figure it’s better to start preparing for the inevitable!). The key ingredients are Illumiscin, which I haven’t heard of, and Vitamin E, which I have and which I do think is great for the skin.  With regular use, I was promised a “fresh and youthful looking complexion”, one that “looks brighter, healthier and more radiant.”
I’ve now been using it for a month, applying every night, and – for the most part – I’m very happy, though I don’t think it’s lived up to all its promises.

First the pros

  • The packaging is lovely, plain and simple but with a feeling of a luxury product (which you would want if you had paid full price – it’s £48 a bottle).
  • The oil has a lovely smell, citrusy and light, which I liked.
  • On a morning, my skin feels soft and hydrated and a little plumper.  It also feels brighter and tighter.

Now the cons

  • It is expensive and I’m not sure the pros justify the price, unless I got another special offer
  • I can’t say that my skin tone looks any more even, though with the other pluses, I’m willing to let this one go as it isn’t a priority for me skincare wise.
  • It’s got a slightly sticky feel when first applied.  I didn’t like this and it didn’t work for use during daytime as you couldn’t put make-up on straight after.  I got around it by using it at night, which was fine and worked well for me.

So a mixed bag but, overall, definitely more on the positive side.  Would I buy again? Yes, but not at full price as I am not that rich!  How about you, have you used this oil or are there others you can recommend?

  1. I like that you were honest about the product and let us know it was a bit sticky. I like to know what to expect, especially from high-end products.
Thank you for linking up to #RVHT, sorry about the unexpected break, I’ve had (still have) tonsilitis, but the linky will be back tonight!
