So, here I am, a year after finishing full-time work and setting out on a life of uncertainty, one where I work for myself and am my own boss. It seemed like a good time to take a look back at how have I done and how I feel about it all. And a good way to kick-start my blog again as I haven’t written for a few months while I’ve taken a step back before deciding what direction it’ll go in (more on that in another post so I don’t bore you to death before you find out!).
So, on to the working – has it worked out? Yes, for the most part it has, though I’m not going to lie and say there haven’t been some scary moments where I’ve wondered where the next job will come from – only for three to then come along all at once, leaving me wondering whether there are enough hours in the day. Overall, though, it’s gone better than I hoped and, for that, I am grateful. Continue reading “Where am I now? Looking back on a year of BIG change…”
As I move more and more towards using more natural products, I’ve been trying a lot of different brands. Balance Me is the latest of these. It started when I was sent a sample of their facial oil, which I thought was pretty good, and has continued with my using their Restore and Replenish Cream Cleanser for the last month.
Picked because it got good reviews and what it doesn’t contain (parabens, dea, mineral oils, sulphates, pegs, petroleum, silicones, propylene glycol, microbeads, artificial fragrances and colours), I wasn’t sure what to expect after basically using one of two or three of the same cleansers for as long as I can remember. The Northumberland Coast is one of my favourite places. This is Seashouses, where we recently spend a lovely long weekend. If you’ve never been, make plans to visit!
Last month, as part of my plan to live a simpler life that reduced the harm I do to the planet as much as possible, I set myself a green goal – to start using natural household cleaners. You can read how it went here.
Goals work well for me, they help me develop good habits and that’s what I need if I’m going to make my life greener. Otherwise, I have a tendency to start off with good intentions and then fail at the first hurdle because life gets in the way.
So, with this last month being a success, I’m going continue, looking at how apps and websites can help me do my bit for the planet. I’ve been using different sites and apps for the last few weeks and these seem to be the easiest and most effective (at least for me!). Continue reading “Going Green: Part Two – Going Online”
Recently, my daughter – Lou – has made a new friend – let’s call her Lily. Lily and Lou have known each other since year one, when they started in the same class, but have never played together before. Then, with the lighter nights of summer, Lily – who lives six doors down from us in the next street – started knocking on our door asking Lou if she wanted to play out.
After talking to Lily’s mom, despite much nervousness, I said yes. The girls are nine after all and need to be given some independence and I wanted Lou, who always plays with boys at school, to maybe build a good female friendship – one that would see her through her school years. On paper, Lily and Lou have a lot in common, so I thought, “why not?” Continue reading “Teaching my daughter the rules of friendship (according to me)”
I love chocolate. I love peanut butter. What better then than putting them together and making a smoothie?
